Healing Without Losing The Edge
SPEAKER_00This misconception that if I go do this healing, man, that capable warfighter will be gone, man. I love that version of me that comes in, but you out. Get in there, get the quarter. Get in your quarter. Stay worth. You're gonna always have that.
SPEAKER_01And that's a big uh one of the greatest gifts that I have.
SPEAKER_03Hypergame really opened up the door deep, deep, deep, deeper than I could get to with the other treatment modalities that I mentioned. It opened up the vault that showed me all the trauma triggers that I was living with, why they were there, and that it's been dealt with. It was like a ledger, an account, a ledger, and then time to move on. Time to quit circling back on trauma moves that have been developed throughout your life.

SPEAKER_01Today, my man, we're gonna dive into your journey because you've gone through it like many of us. You found healing through medicine that for a long time was told to us was a poison, was a drug, and we should fear it and uh abstain from it. So today, Scott, we're gonna dive into your journey, brother.

5-MeO And Ibogaine Breakthrough Moments
SPEAKER_03It sounds like we had very similar um experience with Five MEO. Yeah. I grew up without a dad, and and um through the Ibogain experience, I had like a five-hour conversation with him. It seemed like forever. I was I'm just guessing because there's really no time. There's no way to judge time. Even though I hit my stopwatch, I started my Sunto right as I started like it was like 10 things. Like a good operator. I tried, I tried so hard to get Trevor to let me record myself. I'm like, look, see, I have it zoomed in. It's just my little sleeping spot. And he goes, No, can't do it, man. HIPAA, you know? And uh, but I did go, well, I got this. As soon as I started thinking seeing things dancing around behind me, all of a sudden I had like 80 mirrors behind me. Because I'm looking at my mirror and I'm making my noise and I'm listening to the big way tribe, get me prepared. And then all of a sudden I st I noticed there's like 50 mirrors behind me that I'm looking through and seeing every reflection reflect back, and I'm like, oh I think it's coming. And I laid down and went off into the spirit world. But man, what an amazing experience. I made a lot of healing with my father, which I grew up without. So I mean, I think that was a huge load lifted off that bag that you carry around. All those things you're gonna get to one day, but you just don't get to it. Um, that's you know, one of the key, I think one of my keys to being where I'm at now in my head space and timing was letting all of those things go. You don't forget anything. It's not like you're yeah, you just forget war or all your buddies that aren't here anymore. None of that. You still have every ounce of information that I had before I did this study, but my survivor guilt was off the charts. I was blaming being alive to go be a drunk, you know? I had a really um I grew up with a lot of feelings and all that good stuff, but I had to suppress them for my 20 years in in the Uncle Sam's land. But I I really didn't have any empathy after I got out. It was it was very little, you know. And uh through that study,
Returning To War After 9/11
SPEAKER_03after two weeks, I had to I had a I had two months to get prepared with my HRT. So they got all my levels at peak performance with Warrior Health Foundation. And then that flew me down to San Diego where I linked up with three other guys, Kyle Morgan and a couple other guys. And we did six weeks of uh magnetic resonance therapy every day right there in Cardiff. And after two weeks of it, I slept nine hours out of nowhere. I used to sleep maybe four, and I'd get up, check the house, walk outside, work on my serotypus entry, get back in that bed without waking anybody up. And I thought, well, I'm just well prepared, you know, rather be prepared than get get bum rushed by an army in my house in Freeport, Florida.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You know, that's that's so many of us share that, man, and and it's important to take it back a little bit before the healing, man. Take us to our through that journey of where you've been, what you've seen, because a lot of guys, you know, they're thinking to themselves, nah man, I don't need this stuff. Like it's not for us.
SPEAKER_03Well, um, let's go back to coming home from my last deployment. So I did I did five Ranger Regiment deployments back to back. OIF two was my first rotation. I came back in after a break in service in um, you know, like six months after 9-11 kicked off. Five or six months after it kicked off. I picked up the phone and called one of my last platoon sergeants from the first four years I had in the army with second ranger battalion. Called up Gunny Barreras, God rest his soul. Um told him I wanted to go back and fight the war. And he was a first sergeant at the time in first ranger battalion. So he calls me back. Hey, you're good. You got orders. Go to any maps, tell them to look up your information. They're gonna think you're fucking crazy, but just Damn. Just tell him you're to look your shit up. They'll see you when you get here. And I was like, What? Uh I want to go to 2nd Battalion. I know everybody there. He's like, No, you're coming to 1st Battalion. I'm here. And I was like, I know first sergeant, but and he goes, Listen, you want to go get that scroll? You better listen up, they'll see you when you get here. And I was like, Oh, I think he's trying to tell me they're going next. Because I had been out for a few years. So my my tradecraft was really not good. But I picked it up at the very end of that and um went to MEPs. They thought I was crazy, they figured it out. I drove down to Fort Benning, went through rope and then um or rip for a second time, and then uh showed up the first battalion. I had about three weeks to tie all my shit down and get my stuff, get my ranger action back together, and took off just the time for OIF two. So I ended up doing four more trips, finished up my squad later time, had a great experience, you know, going through the fire hose of catching up to all my brothers because the range of battalion was a lot different when I showed up the second time around versus the 94 to 98 rotations I did. I was actually down to Panama a couple times. No shit. Yeah, I didn't go there, I didn't go there in '89.
SPEAKER_02But I was there in '94 and '95.
SPEAKER_01I was gone by then.
SPEAKER_05You're not mine. Just joking. Just joking.
SPEAKER_03Oh my goodness. I digress. So so uh I finished up four or excuse me, five combat rotations. My swell later time was done, put in an SF packet, went through selection, knocked out the Q course. Um, I had a good time because it was a nice break for me. It was like a year of not deploying, and um went straight to C37. Oh shit. I had a hookup on my last Ranger deployment. Uh I was a senior squad leader, so I was doing a lot of the extra planning and stuff like that. And we had a warrant officer from C37 who was attached to my platoon doing all the low Viz stuff with the host nation folks. I think we can talk about that, can't we? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um the Mohawk. Time has passed. It was a Mohawk program, and they did a great job. We um we were driving missions through those guys, and then of course the the standard JSOC way of just good order and discipline. And then uh started deploying again. Like as soon as I showed up, I got put on 9-2 with Roger Thompson, God rest his soul. And uh shortly thereafter I I broke C37 ranks and deployed without my without my Sephardic qualification, which about killed half the half the company, about lost their shit because of that. And I get it, they didn't have a ton of deployments back then, you know. And um but I did, I I I got to go over to Camp Moorhead and go into a combat zone and do a J set basically. Um but it was awesome. We were training up the sixth can deck, which was supposed to be Karzai's personal or excuse me, it was supposed to be a tier one go anywhere in the nation, fight for 72 hours, get back to Kabul or wherever. But they turned into Karzai's personal security attache setup, which sucked because they kind of just dwindled into that. But um, the experience was great. Came back, did a couple more um interesting deployments, flew into uh flew into Iraq with with Stambo. Oh shit. Yeah, Stambo was my senior in C.
SPEAKER_01No way. Talk about a legend. He did talk about a legend, dude.
SPEAKER_03Um he he taught me how to pull my rangerness back. And and him and Roger had a mission to calm me the fuck down because I was out of control.

SPEAKER_03You know, just be loud and first. You can't do that as a green green brain, right? No.

SPEAKER_03Very helpful getting me to tune it down and understand different environments. You gotta be eight different hats in the same room versus the fucking fire hydrant or the the fire extinguisher behind glass. Um but, anyways, so yeah, the deployments add added up. I got pulled out of there in 2011 to be a team sergeant just in time to train up and go in 2012, which was a pretty kinetic trip for seventh group. We had 48 casualties, and I think we set the record that deployment for injuries and deaths. So that 10-month trip put a lot of weight on a lot of guys. I could see it. I thought I had my shit under control, I thought I had my attitude in check, I thought I had my brain working the right way. Uh, but looking back after going through this study and and getting all the clarity that I got, I was struggling just as much as everybody else. I was just masking it. Yeah. And I was masking it with working out for the long time, and then I started masking it with more beer, and then I started masking it with just beer, you know, and drinking it and staying out all night. It didn't help, it just made things worse. Um I ended up retiring in 2018 in the fall of 2018, October. Yeah, October 2018. Um back that up. I was already contracting about a year out. Once they cut you loose, once your retirement gets signed, you got about a year to you, you get an apprenticeship, you go to college full-time, do whatever, but don't go overseas and get shot and killed. You get nothing for that. We'll save Uncle Sam a lot of money. But yeah, with five kids, 100% torment in total. I got they're gonna be they're gonna be mad that I made it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. They're all going to college. They have to. So the study comes out. Um you get do you have by chance you know Mike Cassidy? Mike Cassidy, sounds familiar. He's a sniper. Uh he was a ranger, ranger, ranger, sniper in battalion. And then he started a couple companies ended up getting out. He didn't retire, but he just got out and started a few companies, successful companies. Um, he's doing great stuff. He was on the board of an organization known as SOCF. And uh he had come down to visit with his daughters on spring break and mentioned that they're thinking about doing the study, comprised of HRT, magnetic resonance therapy, followed by Ibogain and Fiber Meal at the end of it. And they they wanted volunteers, and he was begging me to do it. Not begging me to do it, but like, hey, you're fucked up, you could use it, probably. Intent. I was looking at the wife, they both were like, please do it, please do it. Um so that is what got me in there, thanks to my ranger buddy looking out for me. And then I just started drinking down the fire hose. I watched a lot of the Sean Ryan interview with Trevor Millar, uh Joe Rogan's interviews with his with his guests, talking about FiveMeo and talking about Eibogain. That was kind of where I got my information. That's pretty much all I could get it from. There were a couple guys that had gone down there from different units to go check it out and then go back to work. So when I heard that there had been folks that got down there, sat with the medicine, and then went back to work and like you know, they weren't dealing with any more bullshit, no more noise in their head, that helps sell it too. So I'm like, okay, these guys are talking about how great it is. It's scary, but comma, you do the work before you go down there, it's not so scary, and then you stick with it and stay integrated into it, you're gonna change your entire life. Yeah, but you gotta do all these things. You can't just go down there for the adventure and then go back to hanging out with all your homies and drink a beer all night. Because then it's not gonna improve your situation, right? And I went in there with that whole mindset. I'm I've I've tried everything up to this point. I didn't just stop drinking then and then go do the study and change my whole life. Up to this point, I had done almost 100 H bot dives thanks to the Dream Beret Foundation and the provider. I had done at that point, I had done five still eight ganglion shots in the neck. I had five years, four, four and a half years of exposure therapy with a shrank. Dr. Thors, she's amazing, super, super highly qualified in the world of psychology. She broke me in like three weeks.
SPEAKER_05I stayed in my square. I did good, guys, for three weeks. I didn't believe it. And then she got me. You know how she got me.
SPEAKER_03She gave me a I'm not kidding. I'm digressing that. She gave me a Walmart gift card. Okay. She figured out that I needed some more toiletries because I was starting to bitch about it. And to start off the conversation with her, I said, there's this is how fucked up I was back then. There's the black, there's the gray, and there's the white. I'll give you a little bit of the gray. You'll get none of the black. And I'll spend all our time talking in the white. And she goes, she didn't laugh at me like she should have. She goes, Why not the black?
SPEAKER_05And I go, Oh my god, she's coming after me.
SPEAKER_03I was so yeah, I was so paranoid back then. I was I was 18 shades of jacked up back in those days.
SPEAKER_01You're not the only one, dude. You're not the only one. I I walked into Intrepid Spirit.

SPEAKER_01I I walked into Intrepid Spirit the first time. And uh, like all of us, I just wanted something for the pain. I wanted something for the physical pain. And the primary doctor, she looks at me, she's like, hey, I we got a lot of tests to do. I don't know if I'll be able to ever give you something definitively to take away everything you're dealing with pain, pain-wise. But we can start talking about mindfulness. And I'm like, get the fuck out of here with mindfulness. Under two years, under two years, I was getting my certification

SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. We're just in another I've mentioned this before, but I'm saying it again for emphasis for our brothers that are on the fence right now. Or or are just now hearing about it and don't believe a word that's coming out about how this is helping guys that are going through or had gone through the same um stuff. When I got back from doing the study, I was off the charts apologetic. Like I went to every bar I used to go to. Hey, I'm so sorry. I used to act like a psychopath in here. I'll never drink again. And I just want you to know, if you see me, don't think I'm the old guy. Okay. And they're like, sure. We believe none of what you're saying right now. It wasn't until like two years after that where they're like, are you still sober? I haven't seen you in forever. We thought you moved. I'm like, nah, just quit drinking.

SPEAKER_03How did you just quit drinking? You used to drink a lot.
SPEAKER_05Like, let me tell you about hyper game.
SPEAKER_01Sorry, Red Door and Destin.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Sorry, Red Dor. Sorry, AJs. You know. But um, and then I realized I need to turn in inward, you know. And I spent a good next two years. So I'm almost four years post-study. November of this year will be four years, and I have still been receiving the gift by staying integrated. And when I'm telling you about gifts, I mean it, I mean it like an epiphany will will just register in my brain to stop doing shit that's ridiculous. Driving fast and erratic. I used to make out every excuse. I've been there every driving course out there. I know what I'm doing. You guys don't have nothing to worry about. And that used to make sense. I'd laugh about it, you know, and just I'm always training. Every stupid excuse you can think of to drive like an idiot. And when I got back from the study, this may sound middle school to some, but those who know it will get it. They'll be like, oh yeah. And it keeps going. Because your brain is waiting for these new and better decisions to become your new normal. Because you used to go off of all the trauma, and now the trauma's been handled, and you have this open space ready to be filled with good ideas, great adventures, and positive thinking. And and when when I when I digress a little into this old space that I used to be in, I immediately catch it, and I'm like, no, not a chance in hell. I'm not gonna ever go to the bar and blow $500 on drinking for me and everyone in there. Because I used to be the guy that would get drunk and then shots on me, because I'm awesome. Yeah, no, not at all. Turned everything inward. I worked on my family, I worked on more of my inner self, and and I realized, and it's been almost four years, because I'm a strong ranger, not a real smart ranger, and it took me up until about a year ago to really just appreciate the fact that I was able to work out my inner demons, turn it in where the where the love is really coming from, and that's my kids and my wife, my cat. Even my cat, George, is is way better to hang out with than any of the old posse that I used to think were my homies. Because the sooner you gr the sooner you quit drinking, the sooner you're gonna realize who is is the most important and who your friends really truly are. You know what I mean? Yeah. Not that they're bad people, not that they're bad people or anything, they're just dealing with their own shit still, or just choose to want to drink, and I and I don't.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so it's it's a it's a great choice. I advocate, advocate for it. Sobriety's done great things for me, and I always tell people it's it's it's up to you to decide, man. Like you don't have to go cold, you don't have to quit drinking altogether. Maybe you just put it on that you'll only do it when you're celebrating an important event. Whatever you whatever journey you want, and however alcohol fits in your life, figure it out for you, but be informed and be willing to at least explore the idea. Um, because so many of our friends are dying. So many of our friends are committing suicide after just sitting down, getting attached to these feelings, believing the things that they're going through will be there forever. And then the drink is the best comfort, and they continue to go after it. And after a couple of drinks or a few bottles, because our demographic takes things to the extreme, they get the thinking and they get the thoughts and ideas that maybe they don't need to be here. And it's always, it's always a it's a huge factor. It's a huge factor that leads to suicide. So for me, I don't drink anymore. I I want to be here for a long time. I want my friends to see that I'm standing in solidarity with them and that there's there's a culture change happening in America. I do think that um if you're looking and and watching the trends, Americans aren't drinking as much. They're not going out as much. You know, it's it's uh it's a new new world, new reality. It's much cooler. It's good it's way better.
SPEAKER_03Because you can go out with your family now and not have to deal with as much of the Madness.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because it was getting pretty wild there for a while, past few years.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Can't lie.
SPEAKER_01No, there's uh there's an important thing you touched on earlier, and that was the reintegration. The uh the process of coming back from an experience and and honoring the things you still have to do because it's not magic one. It's not a magical potion where everything you've done is now magically solved. You got to still do a lot of legwork. How has reintegration and continuing your path um helped you and help steer the ship and navigate you in your new journey?
SPEAKER_03So after coming back and getting through that, for me, it
Quitting Alcohol And Ending Survivor Guilt
SPEAKER_03was like a year of apologizing and and and trying to share my journey and not leave out anything. And it's such a it's such a long and exhausting and and experience-packed adventure. You can't just sit there and tell somebody real quick what it's like, right? And I was so I was stuck in that out of this world phase for almost about a year until it kicked in. I'm like, no one wants to hear this shit. I just need to write about it. And I had a few friends tell me, dude, you you're really good at sharing that story. Like your details I can I can see it when you're talking it, and it makes me want to go do it. So you should write a book to help guys out there that won't listen to anybody but an operator tell them to go do something that works. And that kind of was where it developed into the integration piece. Because I started reaching back to Ambio and talking to Trevor a lot and started getting into, you know, this is how I'm feeling. What does this type of stuff mean? These were some of the the things that lessons learned that I picked up through my journey. Um can you help me integrate this? What's what's a good plan? He goes, Well, you need to meditate. You know, talked about the turning inward and and thinking about your your thinking about the things you want to change without listening to the radio, watching TV, scrolling while you're thinking about you want to change bad habits. You know, separate yourself, get off the grid, get grounded, and really clear your headspace and start thinking about things you want to change, and then just start changing that. Yeah. And he explained to me, you got this place that's been packed full of your traumatic responses to things that become your go-to and become your everyday decision-making process, your ego, how to peel that back. Your ego is always gonna be there. It does good things for you when it needs to, but if you let it run it, it's making you do all the things you wish you weren't doing. And that made sense to me. The way he the way he presented, I wish he would write a book about that. But the way he spoke to me, man, it registered, I understood it, and I immediately started putting everything he said into action. And fast forward that I got a wife who's really into she's a Scorpio by like she can breathe fire, okay? And cover you with so much love you don't know what the hell you're doing. But she started seeing me shifting in those better realms, so to speak, of thought and action process. And I had her helping integrate as well. So when you're surrounding yourself with the right people is what I'm trying to say. It's tough to integrate when you're getting out there to hang out with your homies that you used to hang out with every minute of the day before you took off for five days. And now you don't even want to hang out with those types, not those types, but you just don't want to be in that environment that you used to think was awesome. An old bar with the salty breeze blowing by and you asking for your fourth IPA at two o'clock in the afternoon. That used to be my everyday thing because I was retired and I thought that was Valhalla before I get there, is right here. The beach with my IPAs. So I had to really start shifting focus on um the word grounding, isn't just bare barefoot in the backyard. I had to change my eating habits, I had to change my thought, the way I processed things. I had to get out of that fire and forget fine finish, you know, fine fix, finish. I had to get out of that. I had to get out of that trap that I was in from going to war so much. And I, you know, it helped having Jennifer to steer me into the um the calmer astrological um male, feminine, femininity, masculinity, you know, that energy, the energy that's really here that none of us really paid any attention to because we were going down a different path. But once I started embracing this world that I'm in now, it made integration a lot easier. So through that, through the discussions I had with mentorships in this world, uh changing my my friend circle, you know, collapsing my white space to where it mattered most was right here at the house. Once I fixed all the damage I had caused for the decades leading up to me getting to go on this random study out of nowhere, I it took some work to get everyone to believe dad was done drinking. It took a good solid six months. And I wasn't saying, look, it's another day, I haven't drank. Are you marking a counter? Come on, give me a pat on the back. I didn't say anything. I said, just let me show you with consistency that I'm done. And I'm gonna try my best to stop cussing, I'm gonna try my best to quit yelling, I'm gonna try my best to do X, Y, and Z, but I had never I never even had a conversation where I told my family, hey guys, I'm gonna try and improve myself so that you can live a better life. I never even thought of it like that. I took it as this is who I am, this is my house, and this is how it's gonna be handled.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a problem we see across the board for a lot of us. I experienced it myself. We we don't focus in on the idea that what we do, how we interact at home, our behavior impacts our family adversely. If you walk

They will develop this idea that the moment they hear your vehicle approaching, they're gonna tense up, their anxiety is gonna spike, and they're gonna be like, oh, fuck, or waiting for the shoe to drop. And if there's a sign, there's actually a phrase, and you ask your wife, ask your kids, do you feel like you're walking on eggshells as soon as I walk home? And if they are like, Yeah, I feel like I'm walking on eggshells all the friggin' time when you're here, that's your sign. That's your sign to start getting help. That's your sign that you're operating in that same operator mindset as soon as you walk into the house. And you're giving your family, you're bleeding off. That operator syndrome, everything you're going through that you deserve help for is bleeding off in your family. They're having the same amount of stress, the same amount of reactions. So, how do you think that affects their relationships at school, at work, with their other friends? Your kids are everybody's picking up on what you're going through. So you want to take care of the family, heal yourself, take care of yourself, and then come back home, get your wife taken care of, get your kids taken care of, because the war has affected all of us in the home. SPEAKER_03Yeah, and nobody prepares you for it before you get out. Um, you don't realize your nervous system's changed. Yeah. Everything about you, the way you think, uh, the way you look at people, the way you observe, because you're switched on constantly. So you're looking at everything in a different mindset than most. And um that was, you know, everything was at peak central nervous system reaction time to anything and everything before the study came about. So I was I was at that edge where I couldn't find happiness in anything. I felt like everybody was out to do something to create some kind of harm. Every now and then Jennifer was a CIA agent trying to get me. You never know, right? And I tried to solve everything with more cardio, um, more beer, and staying busy, karaoke, trying to structurize everything, even though I'm retired. And then yeah, every now and then I had to go do some karaoke because that was important. You don't understand. I have to be there. But you carry all that stuff that you acquire throughout your career and deployments, and you've got to figure out how to process it and move on. And like I said earlier in this in this discussion, I had done everything that was out there, everything that was available that was coming about to help us, you know, get our minds back, so to speak, get back on planet Earth, get back to civilian or America, you're not in that rap or Afghanistan. And I and I was having difficulty maintaining. I would get breaks of comfort, uh, I'd get months, three, four months of those stalite ganglion blocks. Give me a little bit of time to relax, think about who I was the past, you know, since the last shot, and it would help me kind of tighten up my shot group a little bit, but not for any great length of time. Bringing The Operator Home The Right Way
SPEAKER_03we have pre-PTSD. And but whatever you want to call it, it's there and we're dealing with it. We'll call it X. X is what most of us are driving in the drinking with, we're driving the speeding around town, the attitude if someone cuts you off, all your hypervigilance, you know? All that went to all that went to bed and has stayed there. It's creeped out for a look at the sun every blue moon. But I immediately like, not needed, get the fuck, you know, excuse my French.

SPEAKER_01Yep. I'm glad you brought that up because there's this mis uh this idea, this misconception that, well, if I go do this healing, man, that capital fighter, I'll be it'll be gone, man.
SPEAKER_00I love that version of me that fucking comes in, punch out, get in there, get in the corner, dig in your corner, stay worth. You're gonna always have that.
SPEAKER_01You're gonna have I and that's a like uh one of the greatest gifts that I have is when I got better, when I started getting to the point where I'm like, I've let go of this persona, like, and it was it was like I had the same worry. If I get all this stuff, all the the person who I was that could protect my family, he's gonna be gone. And God gave me the opportunity to prove that. Like I had a situation where I had to step in and help somebody that was in danger, and it switched on so fast, but I was more calm, I was more prepared for that moment. I was there focused on the individual, helping him in the situation, assuring him he was gonna be good. And then my wife is sitting there looking at me. Uh, and after the incident, and I'm not like dumping, you know, adrenaline and dictating what she needs to do. I was like, no, like, hey, you know, you're good, everybody's good. Got to take care of the situation. Like, let's finish our walk and go home. Like, what a gift to be able to switch it on, take care of somebody who needs a protector in that moment, and then, but still have your wife there, and you're not amped up because after every every deployment, after every situation, after every mission, you come back, you're amped up, you're ready to freaking dissect the situation and get your AR going. No, none of that. Just like, hey, let's go about our day. Yeah, let's go about our day. We did something good. Like, let's get home. Like, boom. And I'm telling you, every one of you out there that are still on the fence that don't know if this is right for you, it's your journey. You have to navigate it. But trust me when we say that you're not gonna be less capable and you won't be able to be that warfighter or that protector, that masculine provider for your family after this treatment. He will be better. That part of you will always be there, and you will be able to tap into that version of you, that master chief, that ultimate warrior. He'll come and protect when he needs to, but then he won't sit there and be there and and dictate how your rest of your day is gonna be. Exactly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So um I begin really opened up the door deep, deep, deep, deeper than I could get to with the other treatment modalities that I mentioned. Yep. It opened up a it opened up the vault that showed me all the trauma triggers that I was living with and why they were there, and that it's been dealt with.
SPEAKER_04It was like a ledger, an account, a ledger, and then time to move on.
SPEAKER_03Time to quit circling back on these trauma loops that have been developed throughout your life. It's not your fault, this is why it was there, this is why it went down that way. That's how kind of my journey went. Everyone's journey is a little bit different, but but the clarity that I got to let go of all that stuff, it's it's hard to explain. So I just share the journey, the story that I went through, so that you can put it together. But it opens up the door and it gives you time and it gives you space to start making the right decision. So when I'm when I'm in that when I was in that space and my phone was blown up at 10, 11 at night, and I hadn't been drinking for several months, and I wasn't going out, and my phone would only ring. I was as I've I was completely sober at this point for several months, and I'm realizing my phone's only ringing at 10 30, 11 30 at night. It's not ringing by any of my fucking excuse my friends, by any of my friends. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Not cocksuckers.
SPEAKER_03It's not it's not ringing during the day. It's not calling me in the morning to tell me, hey buddy, I hope you have a great day. It's not calling me in the middle of the afternoon to see if I need anything. It calls me late at night to go out and get drunk and create drama from my family. So I started deleting and blocking. Delete, block, block, delete, block, delete, block, delete. And um it I mean it sounds like it's sad and scary and horrible and lonely, and it's not. I just started filling my day with better stuff. And I was getting a lot more loving in the class six.
SPEAKER_01You know, there's there are a lot of our brothers that it and look, like you can support and you can help people, and you can have boundaries, and that's an important thing for us to learn. As I've dealt with it. Any, if you've been in the peer-to-peer support space, if you've been there helping people, you understand exactly that that boundary of like, hey, this is the fifth time you're calling at night and you're talking in circles, you're going through the same thing. I'm gonna call you in the morning, we're gonna put together a game plan to get help. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then they don't do it. They don't do it, and they still want to do the same things. I'm not gonna do recreational drugs. I am out of the military, but I don't do that. Why are you calling me to go do this stuff with you? I don't want to abuse pharmaceuticals. You shouldn't either. We should get you some help. When you don't want to do that, when you don't want to get help and you've, you know, turn to the point where
Boundaries With Friends Who Won’t Change
SPEAKER_01now you're belligerent, you're drunk again. I'm sorry. My wife and my child are more important to me than having to appease you over and over in the middle of the night. You don't want help. You want somebody to enable you and you want somebody to do the actions with you. No, dog, that's a no from me. I will drive you to a resource. I will drive you to a sobriety place. I will get you the help you deserve. But when you say no, no, no, no, no, and you still want to continue doing things that have destroyed family, that has destroyed your friends' groups, the answer is simple. I'm sorry, but no. And sometimes you do have to be that firm. And it says more about what you prioritize, and it says more about how much you value being a good person in your family than than it says for anything else. It's you're putting your family first. And we have to do that. All of us have to be able to help when we can, but when somebody doesn't want help, we gotta be able to understand it and see it. And that's hard.
SPEAKER_03It helps you put everything into perspective too. Um when you start integrating better habits and you stop drinking or slow it down, change it from every day to Thursday and Friday, and the weekends go to church. You can still drink, just changing up the days a little bit, and then go to church. Why don't we go to church? I'm not saying go there to magically become a hardcore Christian. Go there to meet different people. Hang out, listen to scripture, maybe you'll learn something. I I I went a lot, especially in the military, because it was at least you get a snack, right? You know. A brief spit from Drill Sargent. Exactly. But I wasn't doing it for the right reasons, per se. Yeah. Well, kind of. I was trying to survive off just the de facto and basic training, and that wasn't enough. But all jokes aside, you have to change the rhythm that you're in in order to get better, right? So if you're in that trenches that we were all in at some point in our lives, nothing got better until those decisions started becoming smart decisions. You have to take you have to start somewhere. So start with, I'm not gonna drink on the weekends. I'll just go out a couple nights during the week when it's not as crazy and I don't get drawn into an all-night Avengers and stuff like that. Start small and work into maybe that's something that you want to do all the time. Now you're now you're only consuming alcohol on special occasions and whatnot. But I gave it all up because I was a raging drunk alcoholic, so to speak. I wasn't smelling like a liquor store. I wasn't there yet, but I was heading that direction. I was getting there on my justifications were always pro-drink. Like get up, mow the yard, and then I would go to the sit at the beach all day and drink.
SPEAKER_01That's uh that's something that a lot of us fall victim to because the culture, uh, and and it's I think it's changing. I think it's changing big time. But that was the culture, and that that's something that we we thought it's the definition of you've you've earned your retirement, you've earned your life after the military. You live in Northwest Florida, you're gonna go to the beach, you're gonna enjoy hanging out with your brothers or Red Door. That's what you do. I'm here to tell you that that's not that's not the thing. It doesn't have to be. And in fact, it shouldn't be. You worked your entire life in a profession that, you know, for the past 20 years, 30 years meant that you were gonna be deploying, it meant you were going to combat, meant you were going on many, many rotations, and your family was always on the back burner. If you're fortunate enough to make it through this and you still have your wife, you still have your kids, that next chapter should be focused on them. It should be in strengthening those bonds. It should be about doing things together because as much as you deserve a victory lap and a round of applause, so do they. And that's why it's important to sit there and realize that, like, hey, this next chapter, I got to be. More committed to them. They stuck by me. They did a lot of work too. But we've, for some reason, that never gets communicated. It never gets brought up in the retirement brief. It never gets brought up in the transition briefs of like, hey, let's focus on your wife. Let's figure out a way that you can make the next chapter just as impactful, just as successful, but putting an emphasis on your family. And you touched on faith for a little bit, and that's something that I've realized is extremely important. It's not just the mind-body connection, it's a mind-body and spirit. Going through all of this, there is a connection to a higher, higher power. How has that led you down that pathway or into that realm of going to church and being more spiritual?
SPEAKER_03So I haven't spoken very openly about what was presented to me on Ibagame. And it wasn't the entire time, but there was a large portion of my my peak during the experience that steered directly to some very biblical I'll just say it, three ophanym these giant wheels with eyeballs all over them and eagles. They had eagle heads that didn't move, but they were just staring at me. Like like they knew everything. Like they were judged, they weren't judging, though. I felt like I was getting my life review, so to speak, and that and the eagles, I'm stare I I see when they came into view, the f the first one came in from the right, and then I went off I blacked out. I I saw stuff, I felt things, I write about it, and then I I go to the s I go off. I think I think that personally through my research and questions I've done with different like holistic Dr. Heather Heck, she's a great person to speak to about your journey. She's actually gone and done Iber again as well. Um there is a level that your body, your your mind can shut your like your consciousness can't handle what's about to get presented or something like that. Like no. Or or your ego's getting getting it's it's proper reassignment,
Faith, Visions, And Finding Meaning
SPEAKER_03and you you know, you your ego needs to be offline while this happens so you don't lose your shit and come back at vegetable. Who knows? There's no telling. And and everything I saw could just be made up infinite, you know, uh creative thinking that I just came up on my own. And I get that. However, during my experience, my personal take was oh my god, those are I didn't know what they were until about two years after the experience when I was talking about it in a room with a couple pastors and pastors yeah, pastors, um, and a couple friends of mine that were post-journey, very spiritual at this point in their lives. I started sharing it, and the pastor and his wife started crying. My wife's chat GPTing, my description of what I saw, and then she shows me and she goes, Was it this? She goes, Look at this. And I grabbed her phone and I'm like, that's it! And then everything erupted. He looked, the pastor looked at me, he's like, Have you read Ezekiel 37? And I was like, Nope, but I like 3-7, it's a good number sequence. And then I'm like, why? He goes, Do you need to read it? And then I started reading it finally. Go back to before, right after 9-11, before I came back in. I had a crazy dream after about a week after 9-11 happened. It was fast, it was a quick dream, but I was walking in the woods, it was dark and damp, like the northwest. I grew up in Oregon, and I saw what looked like a podium or a table, and I walked over to it, and it was a book, a giant leather book with like leather engravements throughout it, whatever. Really pretty, right? And I saw a purple bookmark in there, and I opened up the book, and all I saw was the word Ezekiel, and I woke up, and I shared it with everybody in my family. I've got plenty of witnesses from post-9-11 that'll come out and say, Oh my goodness, he did have that dream. And I wonder if that's just some deep-seated, you know, I watched Apocalypse Now too early in life. But but there was a connection there. Yeah. 20 years later, after I retired, I have a I have a crazy, you know, vision that was tied to Ezekiel. My five MEO experience, I saw Jesus. He looked at me, he said, Are you coming or what? And I launched into another, another magical space, another dimension of time and space, and there's arms and legs everywhere. And then my wife's filling me full of love. Like there was nothing bad about either one of those experiences. I didn't get addicted to Ibogaine. I didn't get addicted to 5MEO. I didn't get addicted to other things. It wasn't a gateway drug. I didn't, I didn't relapse and and kill everybody in the neighborhood after going through a psychedelic journey. Nothing bad happened. The only thing that happened is I listened to the subject matter experts in this new field that I had no information on. And I started doing what they recommended, which was integration, which was meditation. I can go into a room now and breathe by myself for about five minutes, and I'm right back to my center. When it used to take me like a full week of break to figure it all out, and then calm down, and then a week or two after that, I would come and apologize. Yeah for something I did, you know, two weeks prior to that, in a in a drunken rage or whatever. None of that shit happens anymore because I'm not drinking. I've changed my whole thought process on how I'd communicate with my family, I'd listen a lot more, I'd talk way less, and I learn. And I've sometimes will just say one or two words after listening for a while that helps put the end to certain topics and sentences. You know what I mean? And I I'm telling you, brother, when I stopped trying to control my entire sphere of influence, you know, all those key things you get taught at a high level in a good unit in the special operations world are great for that thing we were used to do overseas. We're not doing it here. You're not gonna do it here. So I can still recall how to do everything at a high level. And I still train out here in my yard. I can do a five-second rush like no other. Crushing it. But but letting that go to some level, I still have it in my kit bag. Still cool. I still have a concealed carry permit. Just renewed it last year. So I love it. No one knows I did the psychedelic journey and I still got my concealed carry. I just renewed it last year. So I'm just I'm trying to put dots on the ends of these thots for certain folks that are still waiting. Um and you know what else has happened? I've I've been meeting and re-establishing new friendships with the most amazing humans out there. Um people that are truly sympathetic to the healing cause have reignited my fire that there is still a great thing here called the United States of America. People are bending over backwards to figure out ways to establish new grant programs to get more folks down there. We're starting to see a wave of firefighters get healed and a wave of law enforcement get healed who are dealing with the same stuff that we were dealing with, just living in it all the time. I can't imagine going to war and just staying. Well, in the early days, I thought that would be amazing to just stay there. But I'm so glad that there's a new path for us to kind of steer attention to saving, not saving, I don't want to say it like that.
You Are Not Your Diagnosis
SPEAKER_03Just giving people the opportunity to explore other treatment opportunities. Because taking a bag of pills every day sucked. I was there and I did it. Same.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm glad it's not there anymore.
SPEAKER_01It everything has a place, and I understand the importance of certain medications in crisis under the supervision of trained professionals. But in my lived experience, in my opinion, I don't want to be taking four, five, sometimes ten different pills every friggin' day. I'm down to the nutritional supplements and one medication a day, and I even forget those. Like, what kind of life is that? I don't want, and I, and I lived it. I lived it. I I got my brown bag from the VA and had my pill counter and looked at it. And for a while I regulated that as being my normal for the rest of my life. But it doesn't have to be. You can take ownership of a lot of these problems. And I get a lot of pushback when I make episodes about this. A lot of people get really angry at me, and I don't want to be. I understand if you get in a comment section and you leave stuff like that, you're dealing with something too. But I want to gently push back once again. Take off the warm comfort of a VA diagnosis. Take it off. You're not your PTSD, you're not your depression, you're not your anxiety. These are things that have been with us for a very long time that with the right help, the right resources, you can fight this. Know the enemy, kill the myth, be willing to fight back. You don't have to make it your identity. And again, I've seen your comments in YouTube and I've seen your comments. Fuck you, you don't know what I'm going through. I know you're struggling. I've been there, but I can tell you right now, if you're breathing, there's more going right with you than there is wrong. And you can fight back. You can ask for help and you can get resources. Depression, anxiety are normal things. You just have to be willing to push against the narrative and get help because you'll learn how to manage it. Maybe you can step down from your medication. Maybe you can talk to the professionals and the providers that you see and find some ulterior treatment modalities that can help. We mentioned so many throughout this episode, and I'm wanting to push back and share one more. Learn meditation, learn mindfulness, be willing to be present because it's your greatest tool. You don't need to be injecting anything. You need to be taking a pill for anything to realize that you can focus on your breathing, do box breathing. Watch how that helps you dealing with something. SPEAKER_03Yeah, man. Um I still have a decent battle rhythm. You know, I used to not have one. I got out and then I filled that battle rhythm with uh every excuse to go drink. But um right now, well, I'd say for the past couple years.

SPEAKER_03Some of the uh I'm gonna say this in a way that also can come out as these are the results. These are the this is the proof that it works, okay? I used to be out all night drinking and I'd come home after the bar is closed, sleep till eight or nine, restlessly all night, you know, still getting up doing the crazy checks and ridiculousness, living at a high fight or flight. Afterward, once I started adopting new and better habits, so I would say it was a good I noticed it about a year and a half after I got back from from going through this study and trying to integrate. I didn't know what integration was. I didn't know how to do it at the first six, seven months I was back. So it took a while. So I'm trying to tell you it's not an overnight fix. You gotta do some work, but while you're doing this work, you're starting to slow down the drinking, you're starting to get off certain meds that you didn't need to begin with. I had I had I had eight prescriptions, I'm not gonna get into that right now, but I'm trying to throw in some prep before I go down my road of what I do each day and as why. But I go to sleep when my kids go to sleep. During the week, my wife and I are in our beds by 9:30. At 9 p.m., my kids have brushed their teeth and they're in bed. They've been off. I didn't I used to not do this, guys. Now at seven, at 7 p.m., there's no internet for the kids. Except whenever we're streaming on TV and we're, you know, we'll watch some family stuff. We love watching Curse of Oak Island, because that's my family. One day they're gonna find it.
SPEAKER_05We're gonna find it. Season 30 is right around the corner, but they're gonna get there. We find out there's new lidar scans showing that there's a box right here. What? We're going to Azore Islands. We heard there were some guys out there in ships.

SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. So we love it. Okay. And and the rest, the majority of this household is the femininity side. Yeah. With with all the ladies running around. So we I sit in the kitchen and dust the countertops while they watch their lady shows, and it's fun. I don't care. It's it's a it's a it's a good time for me. And then we put them to bed. Uh, they've been off the internet for a while. Wife and I are in bed by 9 30. Sometimes we go to bed right after them. But we all wake up. Wife and I are up at 5 30, sometimes or earlier. We like to get a cup of Joe, my my mushroom coffee. That's another thing. I get rid of the caffeine at such a ridiculous level. And I still like caffeine, don't get me wrong, but I'm not drinking it all day long like I used to. Um, I'll get up and have some mushroom coffee with the wife, sit on the front porch, get some sun. I I like to get grounded in the morning if I can. Um I take my kids to school. I like to drive them in there and make sure they're good to go. I get up and make their lunches so they get fresh, good lunch, not eating chow hall. They if they can say if I can help it, not that the chow hall's that bad all the time, but anyway. Um I have a routine and it incorporates grounding, it incorporates um not taking a I know I'm drinking one right now, but not waking up and grabbing an energy drink and slamming that as my nutrition for the morning. I I try to get water and my my uh mushroom coffee first, let that do its thing for an hour or two as I'm grounding and getting my kids to school, and then I usually will hit the gym, do so or do some cardio out here in the yard, do a do a little core workout for 30 to 40 minutes. I used to go to the gym for three hours. You know, two hours. I'd get there and then roll around and stretch and all that good stuff for 30 minutes, then work out for an hour, then roll out and do all that stuff, but it was super over wasting my time. My sister's a super super trainer, and she got me to understand that I was doing way too much. And when I peeled it back, I actually toned up better and and got rid of the dad bag, the dad bags on the side sides of my hips. But um, so it's grounding, it's getting up early before the sun's up, getting my little magical Joe in a cup, getting some sunrise. The sunrise is amazing. It sets your day up for success. It's like making your bed and then the sunrise. If you knock those two things out, your days are not gonna be bad. Yeah, and then and then um I have some realistic expectations. I'll pick up I've I've got my book going through editing right now, so I'll jump on the computer to see if I have to do any updates or anything. Um, I'll check my social media stuff because I'm starting to push my book a little bit more and more and more as I get closer to June uh 19th. And then um I'll ask the wife if she wants to eat some chow, and I like making her a little lunch. Sometimes she'll make us something because she works remote. And um I get I get to hang out with her instead of going to the beach and drinking beer all day with guys that are just trying to do the same thing, right? So I changed up my whole routine, I changed up my habits, it turned my life into a rainbow of excitement, adventure, and I'm still learning new things. I'm learning, I'm learning a lot more about my wife and kids now that I'm here all the time. Hell yeah. And that's the best thing makes me happy. It makes me so happy. Yeah. And I know, and I know I I forgot to bring this up, but I wanted to mention it before you take off. Um, the quantum entanglement of better decision making is real. It's real. My kids were having a hard time in school before I would say, you know, leading into the journey and a good year until I got my shit together, until I figured out how to live with my new level of clarity and how to incorporate these new habits. And it takes time to create a habit, right? So don't expect to go do this and then come back and have everything we're discussing. It took work and it took some time. But I'm telling you, it feels like it was yesterday. I wake up every day grateful that I got the experience and and I make promises to my inner self-consciousness that I'm gonna continue to work every day. I'm not gonna let this slide, I'm not gonna ever go back just for the hell of it. I'm not gonna ever leave the sanctity and the clarity and the love that I feel this family has now that I'm not drinking. Yeah. That's all. Man. Home wrestling.

Writing The Book And Paying It Forward
SPEAKER_03Okay, so The Operator's Guide to the Universe is the name of the book. And it rings really good for where we're at in this point in time and uh in our healing worlds. I think it's gonna be well, I don't think. I just got an update yes, two days ago from my editor, Sage Taylor Kingsley. If you're writing a book, I highly recommend you look her up on Substa on uh Substack. Yeah. But she's all over the place. You just Google search her name, it'll pop up. She's very ri uh, she's very well known in memo, you know, healing, self-memoirs, uh nonfiction. So um we need more green berets to write books.

SPEAKER_03But um the operator's guide to the universe is uh my story. Okay, so I I talk a little bit about where I grew up and why I became a good ranger, you know, why I not having a dad made me want to seek the hero complex stuff to fix it. What made Green Berets uh what made my time in the Green Berets so memorable and and and you know the path that got me to the bottom of the barrel, the the path that took me to the edge of, well, I think I've just extinguished everything I was put on the planet for. I guess it was just combat because this sucks. I got to that point where a green a fellow Ranger buddy looked at me and realized I needed some help and came down here and asked me if he had in the study. I said yes. I listened to my wife and my friend, and I said, okay, I I can agree, I got some issues I need to fucking handle. I'll try this thing that no one knows anything about. And now I'm sitting here giving back as best I can by sharing my journey, opening up about how much of a piece of shit I used to be to my wife and kids, and how much gratitude and thankfulness and peace that I have in my own heart that I I've I've seen my children's faces light back up. I've seen their grades go to C's and D's to A's and B's. I've seen my wife wash our sheets a lot more now because we're so in love. And I hope you don't edit it because that's the truth. People need to hear that. Your love increases tenfold, trust me.

SPEAKER_03That that is uh is a positive the man sets the tone in the house no matter what you think. He, she, they, them. You need a strong alpha male that doesn't go over the top. We all go over the top for too long, think it's the norm, it's not. And when you get to this place that me and Denny are at, finally, you're gonna say the same thing. You're gonna repeat the same message to the next group, and you're gonna pay it forward by helping get somebody that needs it the ability to make a decision of whether or not they can partake in some type of healing medication through the plant and animals.
